Suriya has receive accoloades from Big B

Even before his first film in Hindi, ‘Raktha Charithra’ directed by Ram Gopal Varma, is released, Suriya has received accoloades from none other than Amitabh Bachchan, the Big B of Bollywood.

The top actor, who saw a few clips from the film when he met RGV recently, was in complete awe of the south Indian actor. And he had even sent a message to Suriya commending his performance in the film.

Says a happy Suriya, “I was thrilled to receive a message from Amitabh Bachchanji. He is such a tall personality and yet down to earth. His words are so encouraging and motivating. It was very sweet of him.”

Thanking RGV, he says, “It has always been my wish to act in a Ram Gopal Varma film and it is coming true with Raktha Charithra.” A trilingual, the film made in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu also has Vivek Oberoi and Priyamani in pivotal roles.

Surya again with ayan team

AGS Entertainments, a production house which has back to back hits to its credit, is all set to bring together two names that has spelt magic at the box-office with 'Ayan' last year.

Suriya and K V Anand - the combo which set the screen on fire with a riveting entertainer in 'Ayan', will come together again for an untitled movie for AGS Entertainments. The rest of the cast, crew and technicians are being finalised. The flick would go to floors on February 2011, said a press release.

Quite typical to Kalpathi Agoram's earlier ventures, the movie would be made in a huge budget. The coming together of the trio has raised expectations among the industry men.

Happy Birthday Surya

Suriya, true to his name, is no doubt the shinning star of Kollywood currently. The actor, who is celebrating his birthday today, is happy for more than one reason, with the first and foremost being the new addition in the family- his son Dev.

“Dev is cute and sweet. And it is Diya who is taking good care of him. Before going to school, she helps Jo in changing nappies and other things. Diya is very fond of her younger brother,” the actor says with all pride.

It is going to be business as usual for Suriya today, as he will be spending his big day on the sets of ‘7am Arivu’ in Coimbatore. But his fan clubs all over Tamil Nadu have organised events like blood and organs donation camps.

On ‘7am Arivu’, directed by A R Murugadoss and produced by Udhayanidhi Stalin, the actor says, “it is not the usual story. We are doing intense research and the film will be totally a new experience to the audience.”

Suriya says, “I am gifted with such a nice family. The love and support I get from them are the two things which keep me going. I am a home bird and I always try to spend more time with my family members.”

‘Keep smiling, keep shining Suriya,’ says Team suryahero.blogspot.com on this day and wishes the actor all success in his future endeavours.

‘Raktha Charithram is real, not fake’ : Gopal Varma

Ask Ram Gopal Varma whether his upcoming film Raktha Charithram is a real or fake story and he says those words that it’s real. But to what extent? Ask him again and he will definitely say these words in blog, “I keep answering them that it will be an absolutely truthful depiction of the original story but it will be only an absolute truth as in of what I believe to be the absolute truth of the story but what I myself believe to be the absolute truth is not necessarily the absolute true story. But who can vouch with absolute truth that what I am saying is not the absolute truth.

The reason why I am saying this is because I was not personally present physically at the time and place when those incidents happened, to claim it as absolute truth. Also most of the people who took part in those incidents have died or have been killed. The few remaining talked to me in extensive detail, but I can’t guarantee that they were telling me the absolute truth. Likewise I can’t guarantee you, that I am telling the absolute truth to you just by saying that they told me the absolute truth.”

Surya’s son named as ‘Dev’

Suriya’s son gets a name as his entire fans are looking out. Of course, we bring you the first news that his son has been named as ‘DEV’.

On June 7, Jyothika delivered a baby boy and it was a glad tiding for not alone their family members, but for the entire cohorts of Suriya-Jo fans. Now, their child gets named as ‘DEV’.

Well, the synonyms of DEV literally means – A god; a deity; a divine being; an idol; a king. Suriya’s sister Brinda also got her son named as ‘GUHAN’. The naming ceremony wasn’t a grand celebration as it was held normally amongst them.

On this special occasion, let us wish for a very bright and colorful future of these kids.

Suriya's Singam act!

Kollywood heart-throb Suriya was in Bangalore recently to launch the 100th film of Kannada superstar Shivarajkumar. Interestingly Suriya watched his latest Tamil hit Singam with his fans at the Urvashi Theatre in Bangalore.

Singam, reported to have grossed a whopping Rs. 78 lakhs over the first weekend in Karnataka, is Suriya's third film with director Hari after Aaru and Vel. Singam, Suriya’s 25th film is produced by Studio Green’s Gnanavel Raja; music has been scored by Devi Sri Prasad. Suriya plays a cop after a long time (remember Khaaka Khaaka?) and Anushka plays the female lead. Director Hari has shot this film extensively in the interiors of Tamil Nadu, especially in places like Karaikudi.

Surya becomes No.1 of Kollywood

Actor Suriya has been officially announced as No. 1 in the Tamil film industry. KUMUDAM – the leading Tamil magazine of India has listed 10 topmost influential celebrities of Kollywood amongst which Suriya has been listed on No.1. The reason they have mentioned is that Suriya is the favorite of Box Office as his films from ‘Pithamaghan’ have done great business. Now all the distributors, producers and theatre owners are so happy about taking up his films.

Suriya’s upcoming film ‘Raktha Charitra’ has done a marvelous business at global box office and the film’s producers are so gleeful that none of their previous films did go for such a big show in overseas.

This is the main reason why Suriya’s 7 AUM ARIVU will be made simultaneously in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi.

Ayan Movie Review

Ayan is one movie that, according to me, shows its best within the first 15 minutes, only to fizzle out as the story proceeds.

The movie begins by showing Suriya aka Deva as a wealthy and well-educated traveller ( who criticizes corporates) only to find his English to be replaced with Madras slang and his true profession revealed when he leaves the airport. Suriya is a smuggler working for Prabhu (Doss)and in this intro scene, he is seen smuggling pirated copy of a diwali release.

In the next few scenes the villain emerges. Akashdeep Segal (Kamalesh), son of a friendly rival of Prabhu’s gang wants to depart from the friendly ways and establish himself as the numero uno. Segal informs the police about the piracy and Suriya and gang have a close escape.

Next, we are taken to Congo, the land of diamonds and AIDS, as said by Suriya’s character. Here we see Suriya, and his sidekick Jegan, obtain a pouch of diamonds from the country’s rebels. Suriya is watched in Congo by Segal and his men and what follows is a brilliantly choreographed action sequence in which Suriya recovers the diamond pouch that Segal’s men steal from him. If you, like me, expected to see more such action sequences later in the movie, you will be sorely disappointed, for, with this action sequence and the “hero’s intro” song (Pala palakra pagala nee), the movie is pretty much over. The audience can now throw in some romance, some twists and a climax sequence to get the entire “picture”. The movie is about how Deva overcomes Kamalesh in his smuggling venture and eventually becomes ( not unpredictably) a customs officer.

Well, the romance does require some mention. The Suriya-Tammanah chemistry seemed very good and the scenes portraying their second meeting ( god! the first meeting was pretty deplorable) have been shot well. Suriya, as usual, has done justice. His acting, dialogue delivery, action and, prehaps more importantly, his looks, are all as expected from the Vaaranam Aayiram hero. Tammanah looks good and has done a decent job in a rather limited role ( which is not new in Tamil cinema).

The first half is racy with comic interludes from Jegan. Jegan has got a decent role in this movie and makes full use of it. He’s not just the comic relief in the movie, but plays a vital role. Without revealing much, I can say that Jegan has done a good job and we can expect to see him get more such roles in the future.

While the “first half” could have been the saviour of the movie, the second half was, without qualifications, bad. There is a fair share of twists and bad song placements in the second half ( can you imagine a duet song soon after the demise of the heroine’s brother?). The twists in the movie are too cliched and too numerous to be enjoyed. The Honey Honey song is completely out of sync with the movie.

Do I have to talk about the villain? He is a sore sight in the movie and Segal has to a lot of work to be done in the acting front. Prabhu, on the other hand, is exceptional. Portraying the role of a gang leader, Prabhu is all brilliance and his experience shows. Karunas has also managed to perform well and the emotional scenes in later part of the movie show his acting skills.

Harris’ music is, of course, pleasant to the ears, but brings with it the feeling of having heard it before. The re-recording is good enough to be mentioned, but is not fabulous.

Bottomline is that Ayan is a typical commercial tamil film set apart by some good performances by Suriya and Prabhu and a rather decent screenplay. Stay attentive during the first fifteen minutes. It wont matter if you fall asleep ( and I wont blame you if you do) after that.

‘Raththa Charitram’, a highly fictitious absolute fact: RGV

The creative director cum producer Ram Gopal Varma is eagerly waiting for the release of his forthcoming film ‘Raththa Charitram’ starring Surya in the lead which is going to hit the big screens very shortly.

On speaking about his upcoming film, RGV says “As an absolutely true depiction of a real story that shook the conscience of many people in Andhra Pradesh. It will be a two part film. The first part of the film will be released in a few weeks. The second part of the film will be released after a gap of two to three months.”

RGV in his blog has stated “‘Raththa Charitram’ is not an absolute true story, but an absolute depiction of a true story. I am saying these things mainly because I was not personally present at the time the events took place. Most of the people who participated in the events or who witnessed it have died and the remaining few who are still alive have spoken extensively about the incidents. I cannot say they were telling me absolute truth. It is impossible to find absolute truth of the incidents which happened a long time ago. But I have taken the versions of the people who were alleged to have been involved in killings, relatives of the victims, the investigative officers from the police department and the politicians who were in the background supporting these leaders and who were also partly responsible for the events. From these interactions, I have come to my own conclusions about the absolute truths objectively without any personal bias.”

He adds further “However hard I try, my film will only have a hazy reflection of an absolute truth.”

Chinese Superstar Tony Jaa in Suriya’s 7 AM ARIVU Movie

The world renowned young, cool and hot hunk Tony Jaa has wide range of fans following across the globe. Even a 5 year old kid has been his ardent buff and now it seems that the actor has been roped for A.R Murugadoss’ upcoming film 7AM ARIVU. The film features Surya and Shruthi Haasan in lead roles as known previously.
The highlighting attribute of this film is that there are only 3 characters in this film and there are no other supporting roles.
The complete story will center on these three actors. Since this film will be made simultaneously Hindi and Telugu as well. So it will be an additional feature to attract even the Bollywood fans, who are already excited about Surya’s debut release RAKTHA CHARITHRAM in August.

Surya Sigam movie Review

It’s really been a very long time that our movie buffs enjoyed watching a good film. With most of this year’s releases turning to be mere disappointments, Surya’s Singam stands out as a mind-boggling entertainer. Aye! The duo Surya-Hari makes it on for a successful hat trick with Singam as the film proves to be an excellent showpiece.

To be precise, you wouldn’t actually agonize that you have spent 2.5hrs keeping an eye on this film. Hari has penned such a screenplay, which has the right mix of action, fun, frolic, emotions and romance. Surya doesn’t try to touch the lines of typical mass heroes by uttering loud punch dialogues and bashing down hundreds of men at the same time. Of course, there are more action sequences that have logical factors and are sure to win your appreciations.

Set in the backdrop of Nellore, a small town, the film revolves around inspector Durai Singam (Surya), who joined the service incisively because of his father’s wish. He settles every dispute in town patiently with his gentle talks. Then comes Kavya (Anushka), a city girl on vacation who promptly falls in love with him. Everything seems to be marked by good fortune until Mayil Vaaganam (Prakash Raj) comes across Durai Singam. As they lock horns, things take a different turn with second half keeping everyone on the edge-of-seats.

Kudos to director Hari for churning out such a successful commercial entertainer, he has overshadowed all his previous records with this film. Doubtlessly, Singam can be adjudged as a better show than his yesteryear film Saamy for its interesting plot prevailing all throughout the show. Although, it nearly takes an hour to establish the characters and the conflicts, the voltage peak after intermission trivializes such minuses.

On performance levels, Surya is outstanding with his flawless performance. Even during scenes, where he hops up and down doing goofy stunts, things turn out to be incredulously good. That’s all because of his charismatic appeal. His proficiency to emote with the right feel gains him more acceptance as a mass hero.

Well for Anushka, it’s the best film as she gets more footage. Thanks to Hari, for utilizing her potential to a greater magnitude unlike other filmmakers, who just sign her for glamorous attributes. Vivek’s comedy tracks are really enjoyable but can be better if he avoids his double-entendres. It’s obvious that he has been coming up with similar shows from his previous films. Radha Ravi, Nasser and Manorama have played their roles well. Prakash Raj is simply outstanding as he gets a powerful role to perform after his magnum opus Ghilli. For sure, this will be one of the greatest milestones in his career.

Just watch out for his performance during the penultimate sequences and while playing the fool with Surya on the chase, he is just superb. Devi Sri Prasad strikes with pleasing melodies as almost all the songs have been tuned out well. Especially, the numbers ‘Kadhal Vandhale’ and ‘En Idhayam’ wins hands down.

Cinematography and editing have been put to use with the best results as these technical arenas add momentum to the screenplay. Hari deserves a special mention for establishing brilliant characters as even the minor roles have their importance. Hats off to production designers as they have perfectly managed to complete such a brilliant film within such a short span of time, Avoidance of unnecessary expenses makes the film look sleek which is commendable.

Singam is sure to be one of the best top-drawers of 2010 and the producers will surely be elated as it brings them profits to unexpected levels.

Verdict: Excellent piece of work

Surya Exclusive Interview video

Surya Interview

Recently, when Surya was called to receive the Vijay TV Best Actor award for Vaaranam Aayiram, from Kamal Hassan, he came on stage and overcome by emotion, prostrated before Kamal Hassan. A deeply moved Kamal Hassan pulled Surya up and clasped him in a tight hug. The crowd went hysterical. Tears started pouring down the cheeks of veteran actor Shivakumar, Surya’s father. I catch up with Surya on location at Ramavaram, Chennai, where he is shooting for Singham.

surya interview‘I have grown up worshipping Kamal Hassan. To receive the award from him, especially when he was also nominated, was too much to handle.’

Excerpts from the interview:

It was a touching gesture….It was a very humbling moment. I have grown up worshipping Kamal Hassan. To receive the award from him, especially when he was also nominated, was too much to handle. I reacted spontaneously.

But what about your father Shivakumar, a popular actor himself?
Strangely, not so. Though he was in the movies, at home he is like any working parent. Sometimes, when I see his old movies, I wonder if it is the same man sitting next to me who is on-screen giving such a brilliant performance! My coming into the film world was not pre-determined. After finishing college in Coimbatore, I joined a textile company and worked. After some time, when I decided to take up acting, there were huge doubts about whether it was the right choice or not. But I jumped in and here I am today (smiles).

For a 25-film-wonder you have scaled amazing heights, both in terms of performance as well as box-office returns. How do you manage the adulation?

Thank you. I’m extremely aware that this too shall pass. But it did not happen overnight. I had my share of struggling days too. The success came slowly, step by step. I got used to it gradually. My feet are firmly planted on the ground. The film is a make-believe world, let me be in reality.

At the prime of your being an action hero you did ‘Sillunu Oru Kaadal’, essaying a married man with a six-year-old kid. That script came to Jo (Jyothika). She fell in love with the heroine’s character and wanted to do it. In fact in the beginning, there were thoughts of Jo doing Bhumika’s role and vice versa. But Jo had set her heart on Kundavi’s role, so…

Was it before your marriage?
Three days after we finished the film we got married. When the film was released, the audience accepted us as a couple and mit was a success.

You once described Asin as a “hardworking Malayali.”
(Laughing) Asin and I started our career almost together. To reach where she is today has required lot of hard work. She was the original choice for Vaaranam Aayiram. We even shot the beginning train sequence and it is better than the final version. I am very happy for her.

Will Jyothika act again?
We are expecting our second child in June. She is a devoted mother. She never leaves Diya with a maid. After the second child and after the kids settle down, if Jo still wants to do films, she will be supported in every way. I always want her to comment on whatever I do. I keep her in the loop.

Is your brother Karthi a competition?
Of course! He is a very good actor. He lives and breathes films. Acting comes easily to him. He blew me away with his debut film. He was able to deliver and show people what he can do in his very first film. I know he can sustain it. He even has the confidence to discuss a script with the director.

You don’t?
I hear a narration like a common person. I should like the script at one go and I don’t like to make any corrections. I go purely by intuition.

How is it that you excel both at dance and stunts?
Not at all. Vijay is a fantastic dancer and there are better fighters than me. I just push myself to the best of my abilities. I know I need to practice dance and sharpen my stunts. But I can’t be selfish, I have to give time to my daughter and wife.

Tell us about your Agaram Foundation
My father’s Shivakumar Education Trust has been supporting meritorious students for the past 30 years. I have grown up watching students receiving scholarship from him at a simple function held at our terrace. We once had a gypsy boy called Rajanikanth whose father had died and mother had run away. When he came to receive the cheque, he asked if he could donate half of the amount to his classmates, girls, because they did not have proper skirts. That was a big eye-opener for me. I started Agaram foundation to help poor students because education is a great leveller.

You have been receiving offers from the Hindi film industry.
Yes, I have signed Rakta Charitra with Maddalcheruvu Suri. But I am content to be in Tamil. I might do a Hindi film once in a while. I had to refuse an offer from Deepa Mehta and an international period film due to prior commitments.
